Cultural Center-Municipal Library

The Conference and Cultural Center of Katerini “Ekavi” is in the heart of the city, within the area of the Municipal Park. It is a fully renovated building with a conference center, a lecture hall, a music education room, a meeting room and an arts and screening room. “Ekavi” hosts several cultural events, scientific lectures and workshops, organized both by the Municipality of Katerini, as well as by other bodies and associations of the Regional Unit of Pieria.

Until the end of the 60s, “Ekavi” operated as the municipal cafe “Moulin Rouge”, named by one of the administrators who leased the property during the post-war period. The original building was erected in the 1930s, and from an architectural point of view it was considered a jewel for the area.

The 1st floor of the recently renovated building houses the Municipal Library, which, in addition to the lending department and reading rooms, has a special wing for children’s books. On its shelves, the readers may choose between 27,800 volumes of books in the fields of Philosophy, Psychology, Theology, Social Sciences, Linguistics, Natural Sciences, Applied Sciences, Technology, Fine Arts, Literature, Rhetoric and History.

Every year, the Municipal Library, in collaboration with local bodies and cultural associations, organizes several events, such as book presentations, performances and creative activities for children, as well as educational seminars.

In this context, in 2023, the Municipal Library of Katerini received a silver distinction in the “Best City Awards” as an “Example of inclusion and reshaping of abandoned spaces” in the category “Social Cohesion and Sustainable Development”, as well as the Gold Award of the Greek Department of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) for its overall action.
