Holy Ascension Church

It is the central church of the Metropolis of Kitros, Katerini and Platamon, as it is where all the official sacred services and ceremonies are held in which the Metropolitan is present. It was founded in 1858, however, the current church began to be built in 1978 on the foundations of the older one, where a doxology had taken place after the liberation of the city in 1912.

The foundation of the new church took place during the Archpriesthood of Metropolitan Varnavas, who remained in this position until his death in August 1985, and it was inaugurated in 1981.

Architecturally, it is a cruciform basilica with a dome, while the chancel is preserved from the old church. Inside the church, there is an icon of the city’s patron, Saint Catherine, as well as part of her holy relic.
