Pontian Folklore Museum

The Union of Pontians of Pieria, one of the oldest and most historic associations in the Regional Unit of Pieria and all of Greece, was founded by the first Pontians who settled in the area in 1928. Its first statute was drafted in 1932.

Since its founding, the Union has been a reference point and a creative force for Pontian Hellenism. With the invaluable contribution of Professor of Archaeology Dimitris Pandermalis and Social Anthropologist Eleonora Didaskalou-Skouteri from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Folklore Museum was established. It is an excellent exhibition that includes more than 600 items of social, folklore and historical interest, which are heirlooms brought by the Pontians of Pieria from various regions.

The museum, which opened in 1990 after coordinated efforts to collect folklore material from refugee families, aims to preserve and promote the cultural wealth of Greek Pontians. At the entrance of the museum, visitors can admire a large map of the Black Sea, photographs of schools and elderly from cities such as Kotyora, Sukhumi and Kars, as well as personal belongings of the refugees, such as books and embroidered fabrics.

The main exhibition of the museum presents a reconstruction of the main parts of a traditional Pontian house. It includes the reception room, decorated with couches around a low round table and decorative embroideries by unmarried women, the bedroom with a bed, rugs, carpets and the traditional attire of a newlywed woman from Kotyora, as well as the kitchen with a fireplace, cooking utensils and lamps. In one corner of the exhibition, agricultural tools and the equipment of a comb maker are displayed.

The museum’s oral history archive is also of great interest, containing over 100 testimonies from first and second-generation Pontian refugees. In the same building, located behind the Municipal Park of Katerini, the union’s historical library is housed, which is an integral part of the area’s cultural heritage.
