Platanodasos, Neocaesarea

Just 7 kilometers west of the city of Katerini, along the provincial road from Katerini to Elassona, lies the village of Neοcaesarea, founded in 1928 by refugees from the area of the same name in Pontus, today’s Niksar.

The central church of the village is dedicated to the patron saint of the area, Saint Demetrius. Completed in 1958, the church has since attracted numerous believers and visitors. Since April 4, 1987, it has housed a relic of Saint Gregory the Miracle-Worker.

Close to the village, there is a rare and beautiful dense forest of plane trees (platanodasos), extending along 20 to 30 kilometers of the Mavroneri River. Visitors can enjoy moments of tranquility in nature, as well as food and drinks at the event space operating in the area, which includes a bar, restaurant, playground and summer movie theater.
