Liberty Square

It is the most historic square of the city, a point for meeting, political gatherings and cultural events for many decades. In its center, the bronze Statue of Liberty dominates, a female figure raising her arms in order to convey her great message to the world.

The statue was created at the expense of the Municipality of Katerini in 1973 by the sculptor Efthymios Kalevras (1929-2011), who won the first prize in a pan-hellenic competition. The well-known sculptor from Katachas, Pieria, in addition to the Statue of Liberty, has also created many busts and statues in various regions of Greece, such as the one of the archaeologist Manolis Andronikos in Thessaloniki, as well as of Nikolaos Kasomoulis, fighter and historian of the Greek Revolution of 1821 .

Moreover, his works adorn places such as the National Resistance Monument in the Municipality of Pavlos Melas, Thessaloniki, and the Monument of Pontic Greeks in Kallithea, Attica. Many of his sculptures are in private collections both in Greece and abroad, while a permanent exhibition of the artist’s works is housed in the Civil School of Katerini.
