St. Nicholas Church, Elatochori

The Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos in the old mountain settlement of Elatochori is a religious jewel of rare beauty. It was built in 1779 and repaired in 1906 at the expense of the Community. Its interior is elaborately decorated with important murals and hagiographies of inestimable value. It also has a wood-carved iconostasis that has survived to this day, with tradition stating that the woodcarvers from Metsovo who created it took 27 years to complete.

Regarding the architecture of the holy temple, it is a three-aisled basilica with a dome and an iconographic hemisphere, while its gable roof with tiles is later. It is speculated that in its original form it may have had a slate roof, just like the roof over the sanctuary.

The temple is about 1.5 kilometers from the center of Elatochori, 8 kilometers from the ski center of the area and 27 kilometers from Katerini. The courtyard area of the Holy Temple offers a unique view of the entire mountainous mass of Pieria, attracting hundreds of visitors every year.
