Monastery of Petra, Olympus

The Holy Monastery of Petra Olympos was founded by the Byzantine emperor Andronikos II the Paleologos, although the exact date of foundation remains unknown at the moment. In a stone inscription which has been placed at the western entrance of the catholicon, it mentions the year of foundation in 1134, while the monastery is said to have been renovated in 1151.

The current church was rebuilt in 1754 and repaired in 1815. An important relic is the Byzantine icon of Panagia Brefokratoussa, also known as Panagia tis Petra, with the inscription Odigetria.

According to historical data, the Monastery was a stronghold and a place of revolutionary action for the revolted Greeks in 1821. At the same time, it is considered a point of reference for the establishment of monasteries that played a catalytic role in maintaining a prosperous morale, in survival during the years of the Ottoman Empire and in the independence of the nation.

In 1929, a sanatorium for indigent tuberculosis patients was built on the site of the Monastery, which operated until 1969. A year later, it was converted into a clinic for mental illnesses, maintaining this function until 2004, when it closed for good.
