Paralia-St. Foteini Church

Paralia Katerinis was founded in 1922 by refugee fishermen originating from Cius in Asia Minor, located in the Sea of Marmara. In the initial years following the Asia Minor Catastrophe, its residents settled in Thessaloniki, but later moved permanently to the area, as it reminded them of their homeland. The Community of Paralia was established in 1957 and officially recognized in 1966.

Due to its advantageous location, Paralia quickly developed into a tourist destination, with a growth in hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues and infrastructure to serve both permanent residents and visitors, whose numbers nearly double during the summer months.

A key factor in the tourism development of Paralia has been its extensive sandy beach and its proximity to the main road and rail network of the country. Every year, it receives the “Blue Flag” award, while the beach is equipped with all necessary facilities, including sports areas, parking, pedestrian zones, water sports, accessibility for people with disabilities and a medical clinic.

Dominating the beachfront is the imposing Church of Saint Photini the Samaritan, the construction of which began in the early 1950s and it was officially inaugurated in 1979. The church celebrates every fourth Sunday after Easter, and religious events also take place on the eve of the Assumption of Mary, as it houses an accurate replica of the icon of Panagia Tricherousa, the most important icon of the Serbian Orthodox Church. During the summer months, the Divine Liturgy is chanted in various Slavic languages for the visitors from Balkan countries vacationing in the area.
