Mycenean Cemetery, Spathes

West of the settlement of Agios Dimitrios and at an altitude of 1,100 meters at Spathes Pieria, one comes across a Mycenaean Cemetery dating from around 1300 BC. (late Bronze Age).

Specifically, archaeological investigations that began in 1985 revealed at least 24 box-shaped tombs with rectangular slate slabs, each of which contained more than two Mycenaean-style dead. The lids were sealed with a thick layer of clay, while the tombs are approximately 2.40 meters long, 1.50 meters wide and vary in depth from 1.00 to 2.50 meters.

In addition to the graves, the archaeological dig brought to light an “S” type sword, with a bone coating on the handle and remains of its wooden scabbard, and a bronze wooden spearhead. A number of painted and unpainted clay vessels, perfume bottles, women’s amber necklaces and 23 stone seals were also discovered. The gifts are exhibited in the archaeological museums of Dion and Thessaloniki.
